This document is available on the Library Tab.

Every year, following the World Championships tournament (usually by September), the Pokémon Company releases a new Modified rotation of sets by phasing out older sets as the newer sets are released. This is to ensure that the metagame stays fresh and to encourage players to come up with new ideas and strategies that will allow a balance to the game and prevent certain cards and card combinations from becoming too powerful as to negatively affect the overall spirit of the game.

Effective August 28, 2013 the Modified rotation for the 2013-2014 Play! Pokémon tournament cycle is as follows:

  • NXDBlack and White: Next Destinies (NXD)

    DEX

  • Black and White: Dark Explorers (DEX)

    DRX

  • Black and White: Dragons Exalted (DRX)

    BCR

  • Black and White: Boundaries Crossed (BCR)

    PLS Symbol

  • Black and White: Plasma Storm (PLS)

    PLF

  • Black and White: Plasma Freeze (PLF)

    PLB

  • Black and White: Plasma Blast (PLB)

    DRV

  • Black and White: Dragon Vault (DRV)

    Black Star

  • Black Star Promos (PR):  BW033 and higher
  • Black and White McDonald’s promos (MCD)

Newer sets that are released after this point are also tournament legal. Cards obtained from Pre-Releases are NOT Modified, tournament legal until their actual scheduled release date. Please note that this post is subject to updates as the newer sets are released.

When filling out a decklist, use the symbols above to identify the sets your cards came from and the card number (both found at the bottom right corner of each card) and list the corresponding abbreviations (written in parentheses) in your decklist.

Let me know if you have any questions or feedback!

Our Plasma Freeze Tournament has been Re-Scheduled…as a Booster Draft! 05/30/2013

Hey, TCG’ers!

Looks like our Plasma Freeze tournament can be made up for after all! This time, I’ll be running it as a Booster Draft, instead of the traditional Sealed tournament. The main difference between the two is deck construction. Here’s all the important information first:

-The PLF Booster Draft will be held on June 22, 2013 at HV.
-This is a sanctioned tournament, therefore Player IDs will be required to participate. New IDs will be issued to new players only. Please consult your Trainer Club login if you don’t know what your Player ID number is if you’ve already linked it. Sanctioning link shown here.
-As a result of the previous cancellation of the Sealed Tournament, HV staff is offering registration at $19.99 per person and will pay for six (6) booster packs of PLF…that’s about six (6) packs for the retail price of five (5)!!!
-The number of Swiss rounds will be determined based on attendance…not everyone will play just three (3) rounds flat this time around. Top Cut (single elimination) may be implemented based on division attendance only.
-Like the Sealed Tournament, Basic Energy will be provided to borrow, but bring-your-own Basic Energy is highly encouraged. Special Energy rentals and purchases will not be offered.
-Because of the slightly more competitive nature of this limited format, prizes will be awarded based on attendance AND placement in the tournament. You will not receive additional participation prizes other than the one (1) Play! Point for the month of June if you haven’t already received it for playing in other local (non-Premier) tournaments.
-If there is not enough players in a division to keep them age-separate, they will be integrated (age-modified) into another division and will unfortunately have to share in that pool of prizes for placing. Please invite/bring as many players from different age groups as you can so that possibly all divisions can win the maximum amount of prizes possible!
-Door prizes may be given out. Contact me if you would like to donate items to the door prize pool.
-Please refer to my article regarding the Limited-Booster Draft format here for information on how it works. I will only go over the simple rules behind it at the tournament, but you will get a better idea by reading the article.

Please let me know if you have any other questions regarding the Booster Draft. Hope to see you come out for this!

Hey, TCG’ers!

The dates for Fall Battle Roads 2012 have been announced:

September 1 – Lawrenceville
September 2 – Lilburn
September 8 – Buford, Statesboro
September 9 – Douglasville, Macon
September 15 – Franklin
September 16 – Newnan
September 20 – Roswell
September 22 – Suwanee
September 23 – Marietta
September 30 – Canton

Click on the respective location for more information. Not all locations have event information and I will update as soon as I have official listings for those locations.

As you can see, there will be plenty of opportunities to play and earn Play! Points towards eligibility to attend the National Championships next summer! Each Battle Road event you attend is worth one (1) Play! Point and there is no limit to the amount of events you attend.

Registration is free for all events, but in order to participate, a decklist is required for all Battle Roads events, and your deck will need to be constructed according to the Modified, Tournament-Legal set rotation (click on the link for more info).

One major change to the Battle Road structure is that there will be no Top Cut rounds (single elimination) to determine top finishers. In this case, the final rankings of players in each age division will be determined by their tournament record during Swiss rounds. This change is to re-exemplify the purpose that Battle Roads are an entry level tournament competition at the local level as a way to introduce and expose Organized Play to the communities.

Top finishers in each age division can earn booster packs from the currently-released set (Black and White: Dragons Exalted), and even a special promo card!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Hey TCG’ers!

Just a reminder that this Thursday (August 16) will be our Dragons Exalted Sealed Tournament! Registration will be held from 4:00 to 5:00 P.M. and will cost $25 per person, which pays for six (6) booster packs of Black and White: Dragons Exalted! The tournament will start promptly at 5:00 P.M. so please make an effort to arrive and register within 10 minutes early, but you are welcome to call the store (listed on the right side of the page) if you anticipate being up to 5 minutes late past 5:00. Basic energy will be provided to borrow, but bring-your-own energy is encouraged! Please remember to bring or at least memorize your Player ID number if you have one; I will only provide IDs to those who never had one before. All players will get two (2) additional booser packs at the end of the tournament! As a result of this tournament, league will not be held on Saturday (August 18).

The originally-scheduled unsanctioned tournament on August 25 is cancelled due to staff memebers who will not be available to run the tournament. As a result, regular league session will take place instead at the normal time. I am looking to sanction a Modifed-Constructed tournament in October, and I will let you all know when I have the date decided.

I am still waiting on all the events for Fall Battle Roads in GA to be posted online before I post them here so that everyone will have a chance to see and decide where and when they want to play. Battle Roads are a great introduction to competitive tournament play on the local level and will help you earn Play! Points towards your eligibility towards attending the U.S. National Championships next summer!

As always, please let me know if you have any questions. Hope to see you come out on Thursday!

Hey, TCG players!

The Modified rotation for the 2012-2013 tournament year is as follows as of October 15, 2012:

  • Black and White (BLW)
  • Black and White: Emerging Powers (EPO)
  • Black and White: Noble Victories (NVI)
  • Black and White: Next Destinies (NXD)
  • Black and White: Dark Explorers (DEX)
  • Black and White: Dragons Exalted (DRX)
  • Black Star Promos (BW01 and higher)
  • Dragon Vault (DRV) (DV is acceptable)
  • Black and White McDonald’s promos (MCD)
  • Black and White Trainer Kits (TK)

Newer sets that are released after this point are also tournament legal. Cards obtained from Pre-Releases are NOT Modified, tournament legal until their actual scheduled release date. Please note that this list is subject to updates as the newer sets are released.

TPCI has also announced that the 2012-2013 Tournament Year will commence on July 9 to allow a head start in obtaining Play! Points towards qualifying for attendance to next year’s National Championships, while the set rotation will still occur on September 1. Players competing in the 2012 World Championships will still follow the HGSS-on format. For more information, click here.

The best opportunities to take advantage of this head start for Play! Points prior to the set rotation are participatinig in Sanctioned, Non-Premier Tournaments for the month of July and August, and participating in the Legend Season at your local League!

You are highly encouraged to build your decks using this new set rotation list as it will better prepare you for competing in future Premier Events when we switch over to this format.

Let me know if you have any questions or feedback!

Hey, Trainers!

I hope you are having a wonderful Memorial Day!

Some announcements:
-The next TCG set that will be released in August as described by Gryphon is called Dragons Exalted. More information will be put out as it becomes available.

-I went to the first two events in the Battle Roads series this past weekend and managed to take 1st Place in Franklin and 4th Place in Newnan! Next up in the series will be this Saturday in Statesboro and Sunday up in Macon. If you are interested in going to any of these tournaments, click on the tournaments tab above. Battle roads is a great way to gain experience in a tournament setting at the local level while still being able to have fun and learn about different decks being played and possibly win cool prizes!

-U.S. National Championships in Indianapolis is about month away! If you need to earn TCG Play! Points in order to play at Nationals, Spring Battle Roads is your last chance! Each Battle Roads event you attend will give you 1 Play! point. In order to play at Nationals, you need 10 Play! Points. Information about Nationals can also be found by clicking on the Tournaments tab above. If you are going to play the VGC (video game) tournament at Nationals instead, all you need to do is show up!
