Format: Standard Doubles.
Games: Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire versions (cartridge or download).
Levels: All pokemon with levels higher than 50 will be autoleveled down to 50 for the duration of the battle. (They keep their moves, but their stats will be recalculated for the battle.)
Pokemon: Any pokemon from the National Pokedex (basically meaning any pokemon that has been made available so far), except for the following: Mewtwo, Mew, Lugia, Ho-oh, Celebi, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Victini, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem (plus White and Black Kyurem), Keldeo, Meloetta, Genesect, Xerneas, Yveltal, Zygarde, and Diancie. All pokemon on your team must have different National Pokedex numbers (this means that you may not have two or more of the same pokemon, even if they have different formes, like Wash Rotom and Heat Rotom).
Origin: Pokemon must have been obtained in some legal manner (capturing, hatching, evolving, or through an in-game event such as from an NPC or special download) in either Pokemon X, Y, Omega Ruby, or Alpha Sapphire, with a blue pentagon showing on the pokemon’s status page to prove this. (Pokemon legally obtained in X or Y will, of course, have to be transferred to Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire for you to be able to use them.)
Hidden Abilities: Permitted.
Mega Evolutions: Permitted. Of course, you can still only perform one Mega Evolution per battle.
Items: All items obtainable in Pokemon X, Y, Omega Ruby, or Alpha Sapphire (plus any that you get from the Pokemon Global Link or from special events) are permitted, except for the Soul Dew. Pokemon must all be holding different items, if they are holding any at all.
Moves: There are no banned moves. (This means you can still use your Dark Void Smeargles.)

145For our League members who wish to attend premier events as a Video Game player, let’s talk about competitive VG battling!

We here at WRAPL are working on ways to help our local VG players prepare themselves for the competitive arena of live tournaments such as Regionals and Nationals, as well as wifi tournaments like the Winter Battle and International Challenges. While we can’t say whether or not we’ll actually be able to hold sanctioned tournaments, we can at least offer a League Leader challenge to give VG players a chance to earn more points at League. While the specifics haven’t been completely ironed out yet, I can tell you that the rules for the challenge will be derived from the current VG Modified format rules, which are as follows:

  • The battle format will be Double Battle.
  • The Wonder Launcher may not be used.
  • You may use any pokemon in the National Pokedex from 001-649, except for the following pokemon: Mewtwo, Mew, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Chatot, Celebi, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys, Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin, Arceus, Victini, Reshiram, Zekrom, Kyurem, Keldeo, Meloetta, and Genesect.
  • You may not have two or more pokemon on your team with the same National Pokedex number (ex. you may not have both a Frost Rotom and a Wash Rotom on your team, since both have the same National Pokedex number).
  • Your pokemon may hold items, but they must all be different items. The Soul Dew item may not be held.
  • None of your pokemon may use the moves Dark Void or Sky Drop.
  • Absolutely NO hacking devices (ex. Gameshark, Action Replay) may be used, nor any pokemon or items obtained or modified through hacking. (This same rule also applies to regular League battles; we may not award points earned through battling if you use hacked or modified pokemon. Just for the sake of integrity, please leave your Action Replay at home.)

445While the current Modified format allows only Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 versions, we will allow the use of Pokemon Black and White versions in the League Leader challenge, while our competitive players are still working towards obtaining a copy of Pokemon Black 2 or White 2 in order to be able to attend and compete in sanctioned events.

We will announce the finalized rules on the League Leader VG challenge here on the blog soon. If you have any questions about the rules, please speak to Gryphon during any regular League session. Also see Gryphon if you need help preparing a Modified-legal competitive team, or on getting started with breeding and training strong pokemon for competitions! We will also be posting more articles in the coming months pertaining to VG battling and Championship-level teams.
